PSA Contest: “Fight the Fizz”

The Healthy CUNY Initiative, an effort by students, faculty and staff to make CUNY the healthiest urban campus in the United States, asks you to enter the CUNY Fights the Fizz Counter Advertising Contest, described on the attached flyer. As you know, sugar-sweetened soda contributes to rising rates of obesity, diabetes and other life threatening chronic diseases. Soda companies profit by targeting children and young people for their unhealthy products. Counter-advertising against the tobacco industry helped convince many young people not to start or to quit smoking, saving thousands of lives.

The Healthy CUNY Initiative invites CUNY students to design similar campaigns to educate the CUNY community about the harmful health effects of soda and help end Big Soda’s targeting of young soda drinkers. Winning videos, posters, music, photographs, spoken word or other submissions will be used in a Spring 2012 Healthy CUNY campaign to reduce sweetened soda drinking among CUNY students, faculty and staff and build support for policies to reduce promotion of unhealthy sweetened beverages.

Students can upload submissions through the Submission Form at: http://nml.cuny.edu/fightthefizz/ or email fightthefizz@gmail.com. Contact Healthy CUNY at fightthefizz@gmail.com if you have questions about submissions, eligibility or art form rules. Submissions are due by December 15, 2011.

The two winners will each be paid $500 for their work.

Leslie McCleave at The International Center of Photography 12/1

A Walkthrough with Leslie McCleave
ICP, 1133 Avenue of the Americas
Thursday, December 1, 6:00pm

Join us for a special walk through of cedarliberty, part of the Remembering 9/11 exhibition, with guest artist and filmmaker Leslie McCleave. The 23-minute synchronized five-channel video cedarliberty was constructed from 100 hours of footage Elena Del Rivero shot as a document as well as an homage to the enormous human effort that was mobilized at Ground Zero. Del Rivero’s studio and home were in a heavily damaged building on Cedar Street that overlooked the WTC site. The space was later closed by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The walkthrough is free with the price of admission to the museum.

Film Festival: Hollywood “Jew Wave”

From the Film Society at Lincoln Center:

Starting this Thursday, November 3rd, the Film Society will be host to the series “Hollywood: Jew Wave,” honoring J. Hoberman’s critical text regarding the burst of Jewish talent and content that surfaced in 1960′s and 70′s. Running through November 13th, this series will showcase some of the classic films which helped solidify the already emerging topics of Jewish comedy and Jewish self-identification, including screenings of Funny Girl, Annie Hall, The Producers, Lenny, and more!
Additional information on our “Jew Wave” series can be found on our website:
http://www.filmlinc.com/films/series/hollywoods-jew-wave
J.Hoberman’s riveting text introducing this study can also be found on our website in four parts. (first installment):
http://www.filmlinc.com/blog/entry/flaunting-it-the-rise-and-fall-of-hollywoods-nice-jewish-bad-boys

Considering the content of these exciting films and the impact they had on Hollywood, we thought your students and fellow staff would be interested in hearing about the series.
